National Reconciliation Week 2025

30 May 2025

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is celebrated from 27 May to 3 June. This year’s theme, Bridging Now to Next, calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

It is a strategic priority for us to engage with Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.

Our Detention Services and Inspection Unit (DSIU) Engagement team came together for a yarn to share their thoughts on NRW.

The team said that National Reconciliation Week is a reminder that truth leads to healing, and healing leads to change.

“We cannot change the past, but we can all work together to make a better future and that starts by trying to understand the past,” they said.

“We all try to understand and acknowledge the social injustices of the present and work harder to better the future for Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.

“Now more than ever, we all need to be brave to make change.”

NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.

Reconciliation is a journey for all of us, as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation.
