Dealing with a conflict of interest
Discover the skills you need to help you identify potential conflicts of interest in yourself and others. Learn the steps you should take to be transparent, who you should discuss your concerns with, and how your deliberations should be recorded. This half-day course is designed to help officers who are wanting to make good decisions that will withstand allegations of actual or perceived bias.
This training helps participants identify potential conflicts of interest before they arise. Having a conflict of interest is not unlawful or unreasonable, but failing to identify a conflict can lead to significant problems and may mean that any decisions that are made have to be set aside and remade once a conflict is exposed. This training examines the circumstances when conflicts are likely to arise by using practical, real examples. It takes participants through a step-by-step process and explains how they can best protect their reputation and that of their agency.
Training includes human rights considerations following the introduction of the Human Rights Act 2019.
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- understand what potential conflicts are
- identify the circumstances that could later develop as either a damaging actual or perceived conflict of interest
- apply the principles of good-decision making to potential conflicts
- identify, declare and manage how a potential conflict of interest should be handled in an ethical and transparent way
- record your decision-making
- apply the training to real conflict of interest scenarios.
State and local government officers of all levels should attend our practical and interactive training.
