New online PID training for public sector officers
The Queensland Ombudsman has created a new online, self-paced training module about public interest disclosures (PIDs). It is now available, at no cost, during a pilot period.
Who is this for?
This module is primarily for Queensland public sector officers.
It explores how the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2010 (PID Act) applies to different types of people. Some types of PIDs can be made by anyone. Other types can only be made by public sector officers.
What is it?
A PID is a protected complaint about serious wrongdoing in the public sector.
Making a PID is sometimes called ‘whistleblowing’.
This module, Public Interest Disclosures – Essentials, is an overview of what a PID is, how to make one, and the protections and responsibilities that apply. It can be completed anywhere at any time, and:
- can be done on any device – laptop, tablet or mobile
- takes approximately 30 mins to complete (but it is not time limited)
- can be saved ‘in progress’ and returned to later
- includes a personal journal designed to support learning
- generates a completion certificate for you to save.
The journal automatically captures your responses and reflections, plus you can add notes. You can download it as a PDF or email it to yourself.
Are there limited numbers during the pilot?
Online self-paced delivery is new for this Office. During the pilot period, users will be able to do the training at no charge. However, there is a limit to the number of free registrations.
After the pilot, the Office will evaluate feedback on the module. In future, fee-for-training options may be offered.
What do users say about it?
“Great training, easy to follow and comprehensive.”
“Training is clear, simple and efficiently presented and stepped through.”
“This technical topic has been communicated in a simple and concise manner.”
Why should you do it?
After completing the module, you will be able to understand:
- the impact of a ‘speak-up’ culture
- what a public interest disclosure is
- who can make what type of PID
- what protections apply
- where you can find out more.
