Consultation open for Wacol Youth Remand Centre

07 Sep 2026 Inspector of Detention Services

We are currently undertaking an inspection of the Wacol Youth Remand Centre.

The focus areas of the inspection are:

  1. management of at-risk children
  2. separations
  3. transfers
  4. behaviour management processes
  5. recreation
  6. personal searches of children
  7. preparation for release.

As part of our inspection process, we invite feedback about this centre from people with lived experience, such as:

  • previous detainees
  • staff
  • family members
  • service providers or partner organisations.

It is our commitment to engage with people with lived experience to help us understand how detention practices and services provided impact people in detention. These insights will then inform our recommendations to promote and uphold the humane treatment and conditions of children who have been detained at the centre and prevent them from being subjected to harm.

If you have lived experience at this centre, please contact us at: idsfeedback@ombudsman.qld.gov.au.

Consultation closes on Friday 2 October 2026 at 5pm.

Visit the Inspections and reviews page to see inspections which have been announced and are in progress.
