Complaints by or on behalf of prisoners comprise a significant portion of complaints to our Office.
We play an important role in ensuring the fair treatment of prisoners. We are an impartial and independent body that is able to help prisoners and their relatives.
Our officers have extensive experience in dealing with community and custodial corrections issues and can assist prisoners and correctional centre staff in dealing with and resolving complaints.

We also have a brochure/complaint form for prisoners explaining how we can help and the types of complaints we can investigate. Complaint forms can be mailed to us via the confidential letter service which is available to prisoners in correctional centres.
We have also prepared culturally appropriate posters and brochures to assist indigenous prisoners to make complaints to us.

As part of our Regional Services Program, we visit each correctional centre twice a year.
The visits enable our officers to:
- Resolve, or conduct the investigations into, complaints
- Provide advice to correctional centres on complaint trends, complaints management and improving administrative practices and decision-making
- Raise awareness among prisoners of our Office and the services we provide
- Audit administrative processes.
A Prisoner Phone Link service is available at each correctional centre. This provides prisoners with free, direct and confidential access to our services.
The availability of the Prisoner Phone Link means that prisoners can readily contact our Office for assistance with a complaint, rather than waiting for an officer to visit their centre.
Note on Jurisdiction
Our Office has no jurisdiction over the actions of police officersrelating to operational actions or decisions.
Complaints about these matters are dealt with by the Crime and Misconduct Commission or by the Ethical Standards Command of the Queensland Police Service.
